Underground Excellence: SLAM Technology at Galleria Borbonica

3D surveying for cultural heritage documentation

The Galleria Borbonica, located beneath the historic center of Naples, is one of Italy’s most fascinating underground heritage sites. Its tunnels, galleries and architectural details create a complex environment where fast and accurate reality capture is essential.

For this project, Giuseppe Minin used the Stonex SLAM X120ᴳᴼ, a mobile mapping solution designed for efficient SLAM surveying, 3D laser scanning and data acquisition in GNSS-denied environments.

The challenge of underground surveying

Underground surveying requires reliable technology capable of working in narrow passages, irregular geometries and areas without GNSS signal.

The objective was to acquire a detailed 3D point cloud of the Galleria Borbonica while reducing field time and maintaining high data quality.

The solution and results: Stonex SLAM X120GO

Thanks to its SLAM technology, lightweight design and ease of use, the Stonex SLAM X120ᴳᴼ allowed fast and reliable data acquisition throughout the underground spaces.

The survey produced a dense and accurate point cloud, useful for documentation, analysis and the enhancement of architectural and cultural heritage.

This case study shows how SLAM mobile mapping can support professionals in complex environments, making 3D surveying faster, more flexible and more efficient.

We would like to thank Giuseppe Minin for giving us the opportunity to follow this project inside the Galleria Borbonica and for sharing his experience with the Stonex SLAM X120ᴳᴼ and X70ᴳᴼ.
